We the people are guilty of having a sweet tooth which can be satisfied with a cookie or two and likewise we share it with our favorite pet; our doggie. Human cookies are not the best treats for our dogs. These cookies contain too much sugar. It would be a better choice to use recipes designed for doggie treats. The rule for human beings also applies to our pets. Do not overindulge. It is a treat for a special situation. Use doggie treats sparingly. If a treat is used too often it will not become an effective tool for dog training or for any special situation requiring a reward. Provide a variety of treats for your doggies. Getting ready to select a family dog? During the Christmas celebrations there is an increase of families adopting puppies and kittens for their families. Please consider family discussions before purchasing a puppy or a dog. Make sensible decisions about the pet you are bringing into the home. - Will it be a large dog or a small dog?
- What breed type and temperament will be right for children and elderly family members?
- Will it be an indoor or outdoor dog?
- Are all puppy or dog supplies and needs in readiness?
- Has an appointment with the veterinarian for physical examination and vaccinations been made?

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all that celebrate this special occasion at this time of the year. Because of the over indulgence during the holiday season our pets may sometimes also eat too much or eat seasonal foods which are not agreeable to their systems. And it is not very pleasant when our pets take ill for these special holidays. I thought it important that as a warning to pet owners that I include a bit of information concerning diarrhea and vomiting. It is not uncommon for pet diarrhea and vomiting to occur occasionally. It is usually the results of eating something which was not agreeble to their digestive system. During special holidays or special events which we celebrate, pets as well as ourselves over indulge in treats or have exposure to food or drink which is not suitble or agreeable for our bodies and we get sick. Our body and the body of our pet reject these ill, foreign or undesirable substances with diarrhea or vomiting or both. For a short period of time this is okay. Should it last too long both human and pet need to seek medical care. Raw meat feedings for dogs have helped to: - Remove hot spots
- Minimizing or completely remove cysts
- Pleasant breath
- Reduce ear infections
- Reduce or eliminate butt scoots

Follow the advice of any food or nutritional supplements recommended by your vet during the growing years of your puppy. When your puppy undergoes a health exam it is to inform you of any health abnormalities your puppy may have. Dear dog lovers. Here is a list of foods which are harmful to dogs and should never be given as a snack or mixed with their regular foods. I find it hard to remember everything and a list can be a real saver. - Alcohol

It needs repeating that chocolate is toxic to dogs because it contains a chemical called Theo bromine. Last year in my vet's office there was a special poster available in the waiting room for the public to read. There is a new garden mulch product which contains Theo bromine. The mulch product supposedly retards cats from entering your garden and dogs are said not to eat it. It has been discovered dogs are dying from this mulch. The poster indicated that death can occur within a few hours or about eighteen hours after ingestion. I thought I should make it public just in case this product is still available. Most of us realize that a dog cannot be sustained on any one single food source; variety is essential. A malnourished dog will usually show its ribs, have diarrhea, hair loss and it looks like it is starving. When we happen on this situation it is usually an animal which has been abused, lost or stolen and is desperately seeking food. With these types of symptoms the vet will probably find fleas, ticks, and a disease depending on the length of time and stress that the animal has tried to survive. However, when we see our personal pet having poor nutritional problems we get very concerned. After all we are feeding and caring for our pet. Malnutrition is caused from lack of proper nutrition from our food sources. You may want to consider looking at another feeding philosophy in order to have your dog live a healthier and satisfying life. Your dog may not be doing well on commercial dog food. Has your vet recommended another type of food? And why is your vet recommending another food? There are reports that many of the commercial dog foods may not be a product that is healthy for your dog. For some dogs dry food may be like eating a sugared cereal. It may taste good, but in the long run it is not a good nutritional food source. Read labels on the packaging. Some dog foods contain mostly grain with some vitamins and minerals and sprayed with fats and meat flavoring. The dog is attracted to the odor and taste but is not receiving essential nutrients. Would you prefer eating a slice of steak or a slice of bread coated with fat and artificial steak seasoning? My dog was experiencing hair loss and two different types of skin problems, and ear infections. I had to do something. I looked at two different philosophies - raw meat and home cooked meals. Today I do both and the health of my dog is very good. This year he will be having his 14th birthday in August. It has been about five years since I changed his nutrition and it has been worth it. |

oAre you aware most dry commercial foods have a shelf life of 12 to 18 months? Oils turn rancid. Fresh foods spoil much quicker. Sometimes your pet can let you know by not eating its food because of taste or something else. My dog is allergic to rice bran. Brown rice may be excellent, but the allergy symptoms remain. Be alert and become a detective to analyze if a food ingredient, chemical or preservative is not tolerated by your pet. Is your dog malnourished? Does it seem that each time he enters into a new cycle or becomes a year of two older his food and nutritional needs seem to change? September 9, 2007 the Federal Department of Agriculture advised caution to chicken jerky products arriving from China. Tests were done to investigate what was causing dogs to be sick, nothing was found. There may be other causes, also unknown. However, there were consumer reports stating their dogs were getting sick. These symptoms included: - Decrease in appetitie
- Increased thirst
- Increased urination
- Diarrhea; ocassionally with blood
- Vomiting
- Decrease in activity
The advice given by the agency was to see a veterinarian if symptoms became worse or continued for twenty four hours as there could be an indic tion of kidney failure or other tissue damage. Salmonella found in pet food can cause infections in both dogs and cats. People need to avoid cross-contamination to human food. The absolute best way to select healty pet food is to become familiar with the ingredients. The first five ingredients on the list are important. The first item on the list is the most plentiful. The amounts of the ingredients in the product becomes less as the list gets longer. After awhile you will learn about ingredients as to their source, how they are weighed, prepared, processed, and labeled. Is your cat not eating or maybe being too picky in food selection resulting in weight loss? If the weight loss is not normal for the size of your pet or your cat is very sluggish she may have an anorexic condition or worse. What can you do? Feed a more flavorful food e.g. sardines.
